Inauguration of newspapers and other vehicles for student expression (websites, audio-video, etc.) requires funds, but more importantly, committed teachers willing to support student media. Based on SVP’s experience, the most effective method for recruiting qualified teachers as both journalism instructors and publication advisers is to offer them and the school a stipend for their participation. In addition, ongoing professional development and support for these teachers is crucial to maintaining the quality of the end product in this rapidly changing media environment.
Our program of direct support for teachers and schools is intended as a short term “primer” to demonstrate the positive impact of journalism studies on academic achievement. School administrators will be expected to find funding for these programs in the longer term. In this “age of accountability,” SVP is confident that any program that positively effects student test scores (as journalism studies has proved again and again in research) will be supported by administrators, and in turn, the community leadership. We anticipate supporting schools for the first three years at a total cost of $6,000 to $10,000 per school per year - a small cost considering the potential scope and effect of the program, and the urgent need of the population served. |
