Our Theory of Change

SVP will achieve these impact goals through a three-pronged strategy:

  1. Refine its program and proving outcomes in key sites
  2. Expand locally into identified target schools within Los Angeles County
  3. Develop a longer-term strategy for further expansion

By 2013, SVP will have started sustainable journalism programs in 14 inner-city schools in Los Angeles. SVP will begin by testing and refining its program in key sites, including its 3 existing sites and 11 new sites over the course of the next 3.5 years. These schools represent a mix of achievement levels so as to test the model across inner-city environments. Specifically, in the first two years, SVP will focus on rigorously testing and refining its program in inner-city schools that provide both favorable and unfavorable environments. SVP will be able to better understand what it will take to sustain a successful journalism program in schools with high and low degrees of support from the administration. Furthermore, SVP will be able to evaluate its impact on its direct program participants as well as non-self-selecting students.

In 2013, a capacity-building investment will allow SVP to begin operating at full capacity and expand into an additional 14 schools by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. During this time, SVP will also begin developing its strategy for scaling the organization beyond Los Angeles.
