School Engagement Timeline

SVP forms a partnership for 2 years with each school, focusing on 3 key components. The program includes professional development opportunities for teachers, student mentorship by a professional journalist, and startup funding and resources. After the 2-year partnership is complete, SVP leaves the school with a sustainable journalism program.

In the spring prior to SVP’s direct support, SVP’s Executive Director will meet with the school’s principal and form an agreement to create either a new elective journalism course or an after-school program for the following fall, which will then be transformed into an elective after one year. After this initial agreement, several steps must take place to ensure that the program runs both efficiently and effectively.

The first step, which takes place in the spring semester prior to direct school support the following September, is the selection of one teacher (or a team in some cases) with the requisite commitment and dedication necessary to oversee the new journalism elective program. The teacher will be selected through a joint decision by the school principal and SVP.
