This graph compares SVP’s program costs with composite data from a survey of journalism advisors in eight Los Angeles county schools.
SVP can support a start-up journalism program in each school for $30,000 for the first 2 years.
The program model covers five categories of costs:
- discretionary / start-up costs
- professional development fees
- production costs
- the experienced journalism adviser stipend
- the embedded journalism adviser stipend
SVP’s points of parity are the discretionary / start-up costs and production costs, which are comparable to non-SVP student journalism programs. SVP’s point of differentiation is the training offered to the embedded journalism adviser. These costs are represented in the Professional Development, Journalism Adviser, and Experienced Journalism Adviser cost categories. The training component of the program accounts for over half of the cost of the program ($13,200). Fostering the development of teachers who are dedicated to the success of the journalism program allows SVP to drive superior results through enhanced journalism instruction.
