The Case for Journalism

Journalism has been tied to improved educational outcomes due to the fact that it emphasizes writing, vocabulary, and grammatical skills (from the editorial process) as well as elevated higher order thinking as part of the journalistic process.

In addition, journalism helps fill in the “Silent R,” writing, in a society that is heavily focused on reading and math; the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has provided anecdotal examples of schools incentivized to focus on reading and math instruction at the expense of other subjects, in order to ensure ongoing funding. In some cases, class time is used specifically to prepare for the standardized examinations.
